I would like to submit the following review for a recent (December 2017) trekking holiday in the Ethiopian Simien Mountains.
We trekked with Simien Mountains Tours (www.ethio-simienmountains.com), run by Dawoud Sulayman and his truly excellent team. They provided our family of six with an unforgettable tour of Gondar and the Simien Mountains. Dawoud was a real star – warm, friendly, obliging, well-organised and extremely knowledgeable not only about local history, wildlife and culture but also about world affairs. He spoke fluent English, having studied in the UK, and we enjoyed frequent chats with him about everything from global politics to superheroes!
From Day 1, when we were collected from the airport in Gondar, all organisational worries were lifted from our shoulders as we immediately felt Dawoud could be trusted with our well-being. The tour of Gondar (historic palaces, churches and bustling markets) was an excellent start to the trip with a comfortable night at the rustic Du Chateau Lodge. In the Simien Mountains, the breath-taking views eased the effort needed to scale the steep up-hills. Days were hot, with the temperature dropping dramatically the moment the sun went down, but we were kept snug during our chilly nights under canvas.
During the six day tour the team made every effort to keep us as happy and comfortable as possible within the limitations of basic (but adequate) camp facilities, coping admirably with our vegan dietary needs. Above all, the personal touches will stay with us – the provision of a riding mule to help the least fit member of the group up steep hills, Dawoud tracking down a bottle of wine for us on Christmas day and his cook going to the trouble of baking a cake at 4000 metres!
