New Ethiopia-Djibouti railway

According to this BBC report (, the new electric Ethiopia-Djibouti railway, stopping among other places at Bishoftu, Adama, Awash and Dire Dawa, is finally operational as of 1 January 2018. After several delays since it officially opened in 2016, I’m not sure how definitive this is, but it would be worth checking if you are thinking of heading that way (and great to have a quick trip report from anybody who does use the service). Fares are posted here ( Leaving Addis Ababa, there are three stations, at Sebeta and Furi-Labu southwest of the city centre, and Akaki-Kaliti to the southeast.

A friend of mine did it in January 2018 so it works, but it runs only every second day (not sure which one), you get information in La Gare in Addis Ababa.
