Hotel security in Addis Ababa

Colin writes:

At the end of August I was robbed in my room in a hotel in Bole (Addis Ababa) while out at work. I lost cash, a camera, an e-reader and an iPod, as well as the use of my suitcase, which was forced. The hotel had no safe, and no insurance. The hotel staff took me to the local police station to report the theft, in Chechnya. The officer who dealt with my case observed that I had no proof that the items had been stolen, the presumption being that I had stolen them from myself, in addition to ruining my own suitcase. There was clearly no question of my being able to make an insurance claim, in the absence of any police report. Better make sure your hotel has a safe, and use it.
