Further clarification on domestic flight discounts

A quick reminder to all travellers that domestic fares within Ethiopia are once again significantly cheaper if your international ticket is with Ethiopian Airlines, the only domestic carrier.

As things stand, the full fare for most one-leg domestic flights, for instance booked through the website, remains as it was before, typically around US$130 per flight (you can check this on their website).

However, these fares have now been vastly reduced (by more than 50%) but ONLY to passengers who book their international flight to Addis Ababa with Ethiopia Airlines. In this case, the fare is typically around US$50-60 per leg!

So far as I understand it, to take advantage of this massive discount, you have two options:

The first is to book your domestic flights together with your international flight with Ethiopian Airlines. The discount should then be built into the fare (but do check this before you pay).

The second is to book the international flight in isolation, then if you provide that ticket number, you or any operator can book discounted domestic flights at any Ethiopian Airlines ticketing office, before you arrive or, if you prefer, once you are in Ethiopia.

Obviously, for those who intend to use a few domestic flights in Ethiopia, this could be an important factor in deciding which carrier you use to fly to Addis Ababa – a saving of say $100 on an international ticket with another airline will quickly be offset by the discount on domestic flights offered by Ethiopian Airlines.

…also, if you decide to just delay your departure or simply oversleep your taxi to the airport , they only charge 300 birr (about 15 US) penalty to postpone your flight, which I thought was great! I made the trip to Lalibela airport to cancel my flight prior to scheduled departure, only to find out that it was not only unnecessary but also impossible!

I called the Toronto office just now and the lady didn’t know what I was talking about. She suggested that I needed an Ethiopian ID for the domestic flight discount.

However, I am only getting a one-way international ticket. Maybe that is why?

Hi Jeff, ET does change its rulings the whole time, and it may be there is some regional variation, but so far as I know a one-way ticket into the country would still make you eligible for the cheaper rate on domestic flights. So I am 90% sure she is simply incorrect. It might even be that if you ask her to book the flights and then to enter your international flight number into the system, the discount will come through automatically…?

from where can i book online domestic flight to mekele ? and if i have only one way on Ethiopian airlines can i get the discount or should to be two ways ?
    thanks

So far as I’m aware, you can’t book discounted tickets online – you will need to do it through an ET office domestic or abroad.

I think the one-way ticket will qualify you, it did when the discount was first introduced, but you will need to check the current situation with the airline.

If I book a one way flight into Ethiopia on an Ethiopian Airlines plane but pay for it using United or Lufthansa miles, will this ticket qualify me for the domestic discount?
