Guide recommendations

My wife and I had a wonderful 5 weeks in Ethiopia in Oct/Nov and I wanted to recommend two best guides.
For 2 weeks we explored the south with Golden Tekeba (who lives in Addis) in a brand-new Toyota which he organised.
In Ethiopia there are lots of guides but some stand out and Golden was amazing. We picked him from Thorn Tree recommendations and we were not disappointed He is very professional , very well-informed and totally focussed on giving his guests a special experience . Out of all the guides we met Golden was special for his personality , humour and warmth .It was always entertaining to be with him and we felt that we made a real friendship.
The south turned out to be fascinating – our experiences varied from the extraordinary bull-jumping with the Hamer people , a local Hamer dance that Golden organised , visits to remote villages were we were treated as special guests , the amazing markets at Key Afar and Turmi . We also got to see the other side of things – the Mursi competing for photo opportunities etc..The construction by the Chinese of new roads everywhere will change the south and its tribal cultures forever so now is the time to visit.
Golden is at ethiopiatravel@yahoo.comand

A great surprise in our trip was Axum (Aksum?) in Tigrai . We had a few days at the fabulous Gerhalta Lodge in Tigrai and we visited many of the rock-hewn churches . Eventually the world will realise that these are as extra-ordinary as the Easter Island statues or Machu Picchu ! Then we had 4 days in Axum , which is 3 more than most travellers, but getting to know this area was a highlight .
Axum is a delghtful small Tigrai town with archeological marvels everywhere , even in the backyards of homes .We ate about 12 times at the Yohannis International restaurant , entertained by the charming owners , a Tigrai lady who grew up in the US and her husband .There we met Teshome Gesesew who looked after us for 4 days .It was a very special experience to really get to know this little town , its markets , its hospital ,the famous archelogical sites , the beautiful surrounding country-side , and we even visited Teshome’s mother’s home.
Tesh is a very impressive young man with a real pride in his community and his family and he also became a great friend.
Teshome is at, POBox 164 , Aksum , and phone 251 913 141 140.He is Aksum Adventure and Guiding Service
I would be happy to give prospective travellers more info .
The highlights of our 5 weeks tour were Aksum (Axum?) , the south with Golden , the amazing Gheralta region , and the bars with traditional music where we felt like very honoured guests while the locals shoulder-danced and bought us wealthy (relative to the locals ) travellers drinks !

    Dear Bradt team
I visited Ethiopia for 2 weeks in December 2011. My local guide was Yigo Getu Tarkegn. Yigo was a truly exceptional guide. He is graduated from the Lion Ethiopia Tourism College and is extremely knowledgable in everything about his country from geography, history, religion, culture, politics… In fact, Yigo knows not only about Ethiopia but is very up to date with everything that is happening in the world. He is fluent in English and works absolutely professional. Yigo took care of all matters of the trip and planned everything very carefully. He was very helpful at all times and it was thanks to Yigo that the trip became a wonderful and unforgettable experience for me.
Yigo’s contact details are as follows:

    P.O.Box:- 26001 Code:- 1000
    Addis Ababa, Ethiopia ;

Also i want to take this opportunity and say some good words about my driver Henok Cool Getachev. Henok is at least as cool as his name! No but seriously, having a good driver in Ethiopia is worth more than gold. It is definitely not an easy job to drive on these roads with so many children, people, animal constantly crossing in front of the car. Henok drives extremely prudently and carefully and i felt all the time very safe.
Henok can be reached on his cell phone: +251 911 17 34 74 or by email:
I would like to thank Yigo and Henok again for their great jobs done and i would like to warmly recommend them to everyone planning to visit Ethiopia.
    Best regards, Nik, Switzerland
