Ankober Palace Lodge

Ankober Palace Lodge  – great place ,been twice BUT

1.       Customers need to be aware you have to leave your car at the bottom of the conical hill on which lodge is built and climb steps/footpath for 5/10minutes to reach reception. Not the place to take the elderly or immobile..

2.       You are some 9000ft plus – you need warm clothes in the evenings –  restaurant has a fire but rooms chilly.

3.       As at 09/09 Addis  to Debre  Berhan road under repair 2009 – ie new tarmac being done…

BUT   Don’t be put off by these facts… it is a magical place —you will probably get photos with the clouds  below you in the valley…..

    Ankober Palace Lodge:
The most overpriced and disappointing hotel I visited during the last 3 and a half years in Ethiopia.

Ankober now charges around 150 USD for a double room. These rooms may or may not have a shower, toilet seats or enough blankets (one of ours did not, but the other one had a constantly dripping tap entertaining us during the night). For the 150 USD, three people are supposed to share one towel of the size of a napkin. Getting a cup of tea before dinner on an extremely cold evening proved impossible because all fireplaces were reserved for preparing dinner. Having dinner at a time convenient for the guest is another concept unknown to the management. Dinner is at 8, whether you are hungry or not, is none of their concern. The food is rather good, but the Shiro wot was burned and the Injera showed similar features (I can recommend the vegetable soup and the bread, though). If you expect to get a napkin for your dinner you will be disappointed – we were lucky and managed to get one only after a number of repeated requests.
Having breakfast before 8 a.m. is another service the management is not ready to provide and when you finally make it to breakfast you might find it odd that there is no milk available for your tea or coffee. If you are lucky you might get milk powder – but this requires that you ask for it more than once.
Another thing you should certainly avoid if you still intend going there, is to use the restroom of the restaurant as the likelihood of breaking one’s neck on the steep and unlit stairs is high. The place itself might be confused with a swimming pool: more water on the floor than coming out of the tap.
In any other Ethiopian restaurant you would be offered water and soap to wash your hands before eating, not here (maybe this is the idea behind the “eco-tourism” concept?)
To conclude: I have stayed in a number of hotels where I paid the same price in Birr I was expected to pay in US here and got a far better service and a nicer bedroom.
The next time I intend to visit Ankober, I will spend the night in Debre Birhan.

      Dear Mr. Zimmermaann,
We regret very much that you were disapponted with our service at the time of your visit. We have formally appologized for the inconvenience that was caused to you on the website.
We have reacted as follows and would appreciate your views in order to improve our service in the future.
We have noted the observations and strong criticism by Mr. Zimmermann. After a thorough investigation the following are our comments.
1-Ankober lodge has never charged 150 USD for a double room. Our rates even at peak season 95$ including breakfast for two. Our rate during low season is 60$.
2- It is our policy and practice to serve dinner and breakfast at the time chosen by our clients. Indeed we serve breakfst often at 0500 in the morning as many of our clients are bird watchers who have to rise up early inthe morning
3- Each room is equipped with two large and two small towels. We also have no difficulty to provide napkins or additional blankets as required.
4- We thank mr Zimmermann for his remark that the food is “rather good.” We regret that the particular serving that day was not to his taste.
5- We agree with Mr. Zimmermann that our toilet facilities below the main hall are below standard. We are in the process of upgrading them.
6-WE ALSO REGRET DEEPLY THAT THE ROOM THAT MR ZIMMERMANN STAYED IN HAD A LICKING TAP THAT PARTICULAR NIGHT WHICH DISTURBED HIM.
7- FINALLY WE APPREECIATE THE COMMENTS OF MR ZIMMERMANN THOUGH WE FIND SOME OF THEM UNNECESSARILY HARSH AND WITHOUT FOUNDATION.
WE DO HOPE THAT MR ZIMMERMANN WOULD GIVE US ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE UP FOR HIS INCONVENIENCES.

I am very glad to hear that Ankober Lodge seems to be eager to provide better service.
I however commend anyone looking for a service up to the price charged to travel south to the Haile Ressort in Hawassa

        Dear Mr. Zimmermann,
We thank you for your comments of 27 September 2010. We pruposely took time from reacting in order not to prejudice our prospective clients.
We are happy to note that you are “glad to hear that Ankober Lodge seems to be eager to provide better service…”
We recognize nothing is better than criticism (even when it is harsh)to put a business on its toes to improve service. We thank you for that.
We note you recommend Haile Resort in Hawassa which we welcome. Let us however add that Hawassa is in the South with warmer climate, on the shores of Lake Hawassa in side the City of the same name.
Ankober is in the north, with a cooler climate or as we say “alpine” climate, rugged mountainous territory giving spectacular scenery, and a completely rural and peaceful atmosphere. We encourage visitors to visit the Haile Ressort, named after, and owned by our world renowned Athlete Haile Gabreselassie,to enjoy the sunshine of Hawassa and on their way back to stop at Ankober and chill out enjoying a historic set up.
Thank you again for your interest and hope to welcome you at your earliest convenience.
